Cooking Features

The process of making homemade mulled wine is relatively simple, but in order for this drink to turn out to be really tasty and useful, you need to know a few subtleties.

  • Mulled wine does not have to be made from expensive wine - its elegant bouquet will still be lost against the background of spices. Wine can be ordinary, but it should still be natural and of high quality, otherwise mulled wine will give off the smell of alcohol, which is why it will not be very pleasant to drink it. The aroma of alcohol will be present in mulled wine and if it is made from fortified wine.
  • Usually dry red wine is used to make mulled wine, sweetening it with sugar or honey. Some recipes involve the use of dry white wine. If the drink that you use to make mulled wine belongs to the category of semi-dry or semi-sweet wines, sugar or honey, you need to add a little less than indicated in the recipe.
  • Spices ground into powder are not suitable for mulled wine. They will make the drink cloudy. Grind pepper, cardamom, star anise, anise, cloves and cinnamon before adding to the drink is not worth it. Zest is also better not to rub, but cut into spirals or slices. The exception is nutmeg, which is added to the drink in powder form.
  • You should not use spices for the preparation of mulled wine, the aroma and taste of which are almost identical. When using lemon zest, do not add cardamom to the drink. If you have already put ginger in the pan, do not put black or allspice in it.
  • Honey when cooking mulled wine is added last, in order to preserve the maximum amount of useful substances contained in it.
  • When cooking mulled wine, try not to allow the wine to boil. As soon as bubbles begin to appear on the surface, the pot of drink should be immediately removed from the heat.
  • Before tasting, mulled wine is given time to infuse and cool to 60-70 degrees, after which it is filtered and only after that it is poured into cups and served to the table.
