How to eat a passion fruit

Fruits, the names of which some of our compatriots learned about 10-20 years ago, have now become quite accessible, they can be found in almost any large store, even in the provinces. These include passion fruit. Many of us saw this name on packets with juice, admired the rounded oblong purple or yellow fruits on the shelves of supermarkets, wondered what they taste, but did not dare to buy. And the thing is that not everyone knows how to eat a passion fruit and what can be cooked from it.

Passion fruit belongs to the genus Passionflower. Other plant names are passionfruit edible, purple granadilla, the fruit of passion. Brazil is home to the passion fruit, although it is also growing in the territories of some other countries.

Passion fruit and in shape and color resemble plums, but have a larger size. They can reach a length of 10-12 cm, although there are also small fruits with a size of only 3 cm. The average weight of a fruit is 90-100 g.

If the skin of the passion fruit is smooth, the fruit is still green. In ripe fruit skin is wrinkled, sometimes has small cracks. However, if the fetus was wrinkled and cracked, got a brown tint, it became very ripe and became unfit for human consumption.

Edible at the passion fruit is the flesh. It has an unusual texture: consists of small seeds, covered with a jelly-like shell. These are the bags of pulp that surround the seeds and are eaten.

The seeds themselves are also edible, but have a bitter taste. They are either swallowed without chewing, or removed by rubbing the pulp through a sieve.

The peel of the passion fruit is not consumed in food: it has an unpleasant taste and can cause indigestion. The passion fruit pulp itself has a mild laxative and diuretic effect. Regular consumption of fruit reduces the risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Because of the possible individual intolerance of the fruit, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5 years, pregnant women and nursing mothers. But healthy people should begin their acquaintance with a passion fruit with small portions.

Usage Features

For food use passion fruit pulp or its juice. To do this, the fruit is washed and cut with a sharp knife, it is better even with teeth. When cutting the fruit is important to prevent leakage of juice. Then the halves quickly dissociate and turn the pulp up. This pulp can be eaten with spoons or scraped and used to prepare various dishes. Passion fruit has a pronounced sweet taste, so it is most often used for making desserts and drinks.

Some of the most popular ways to eat passion fruit are:

  • use of spoons in its pure form;
  • use as a base for making jelly or souffle;
  • decoration of ice cream and other desserts - for this, the passion fruit pulp is mixed with gelatin diluted in water, covered with the resulting mixture dessert and cooled;
  • passion fruit pulp is used to make sauces that are suitable as an addition to meat dishes;
  • from the passion fruit you can make jam;
  • passion fruit pulp can be the basis for ice cream;
  • delicious and thick cocktails with passion fruit are obtained.

There are many recipes for desserts in which passion fruit is the main ingredient.

Passion fruit souffle

Composition:

  • passion fruit - 0, 3 kg;
  • brown sugar - 50 g;
  • white sugar - 40 g;
  • icing sugar - to taste;
  • chicken egg - 3 pcs .;
  • salt - a pinch.

Method of preparation:

  • Separate the yolks from the proteins.
  • Add brown sugar to yolks, beat with a whisk.
  • Wash the fruits of the passion fruit, cut them in half, extract the pulp with a spoon.
  • Beat it with a blender, mix with the yolk mass. Beat them together using a whisk.
  • Place cooled proteins in a clean, dry container, add a pinch of salt to them.
  • Beat whites to steady peaks. If water, fat or particles of yolks get into the protein mass, the goal may be unattainable.
  • In whipped whites, add white sugar in small portions, whipping them along with it.
  • Add half of the protein mass to the mixture of yolks and passion fruit. Stir gently.
  • Spread the mixture in molds, cover with the remaining protein mass.
  • Heat the oven to 200 degrees, put the molds into it with the prepared mass. Cook the souffle for 10 minutes.

Before serving, sprinkle the passion fruit soufflle with powdered sugar.

Passion Fruit Ice Cream

Composition:

  • passion fruit - 0, 3 kg;
  • condensed milk - 150 ml;
  • cream with fat content of 33% - 0, 25 l.

Method of preparation:

  • The fruit of the passion fruit, washed out, cut. Remove the pulp and wipe it through a sieve.
  • Combine the resulting juice with condensed milk, mix well and put in the freezer for half an hour.
  • After a specified time, whip the cream.
  • Stir the fruit-milk mass.
  • Continuing to whip the cream, enter the mixture of passion fruit and condensed milk.
  • Put the resulting mass in a glass form with a layer of not more than 3 cm.
  • Send the form for 2-3 hours to the freezer.

If the ice cream layer is thicker, it will take longer to freeze. Ice cream according to this recipe can be prepared in portioned tins or ice-cream bowls.

Passion Fruit Smoothie

Composition:

  • passion fruit - 0, 2 kg;
  • banana - 100 g;
  • pineapple - 0, 2 kg;
  • oranges - 0.5 kg;
  • Lime - 1 pc.

Method of preparation:

  • Peel the pineapple, cut a piece of pulp of the right size, cut it into small cubes, place it in the blender bowl.
  • Cut the passion fruit, remove the pulp from them, put it to the pineapple.
  • Peel a banana, cut into slices, add to other fruits.
  • From oranges and lime, squeeze the juice, pour in to the fruit.
  • Turn on the blender and turn the contents of its bowl into a homogeneous mass.
  • Pour the smoothie into glasses and serve.

An even easier way to make a passion fruit smoothie is to combine the flesh of passion fruit with yogurt and whip. The ratio of these products can be arbitrary.

Passion fruit is a Brazilian fruit with sweet pulp. It can be eaten just like that or used to prepare various desserts.
